When I was young I remember going to see a play with my friends. I recall the main actor fighting for the one he loves and by the end of the play I felt so much tension as I awaited the final act. As the last musical number drew to an end, I saw all those characters that also longed for the victory finally meet the fulfillment of their hopes. Characters that had passed returned, friends lost, popped in once again, and the love of the hero was finally called 'MINE'.
Oh what joy awaits those who wait on the Lord...In this passage we see a multi layered audience. An audience that awaits the great arrival of the finale. Where God gets His bride. The land that hopes shall be fulfilled. The sick who long for healing shall be satisfied with renewal. Those who were weak shall be made strong.
In verse 3-4 it mentions our knees and hands. These limbs are meant for work, yet they are not always productive as we wish they could be. The limbs mentioned in this passage are feeble and weak and maybe you feel the same. Whether we are busy or weary, no matter how much we labor, we are all still left with lack and still wanting more. That which is just beyond our reach. Maybe this is inevitable. Maybe at our best we can only reach the end of Act I but alas we keep our eyes between the curtains.
Like the play I watched when a child... when the Lord returns He will give us the true joy that we seek, and the true true abundance that we always find beyond our reach. The Finale shall be wonderful but until then know that you do not long for Him alone. Your work is not in vain. Creation longs with you. Those sick and well both long with you and if you feel like giving up remember this... it's gonna be worth it.
Meditate on these words today:
Strengthen the feeble hands,
steady the knees that give way;
say to those with fearful hearts,
“Be strong, do not fear;
your God will come,
He will come with vengeance;
with divine retribution
He will come to save you.”
