Today, I read a blog by Carlos Whittaker entitled: Kill it.  The ideas behind it was GREAT, asking church workers and/or church members to decide if there was one thing they could kill in the church what would it be.  Appallingly, Youth Ministry was one idea that came up...twice! 
  I was shocked and saddened by this.  I wish I knew what the reasoning was...

Youth ministry done well (like yours!) provides a community of peers and spiritual mentors that would be lacking otherwise. I think the youth ministry can be a real oasis for teens.
ReplyDeleteSome people see youth ministry as an artificial community that only breeds the consumer Christianity model found in churches today. Of course, I don't believe this, but I have heard this argument before. Youth need to be ministered to, period. Whether or not a church has the resources and vision to hire a paid youth worker is up to them.
